RR 10 2024 Race #8 – Wide Lane

Looking back through some old race reports, at Wide Lane in 2022, the race was taking part in the middle of a heatwave, with some of the highest UK temperatures on record. This was not the case tonight, it was positively chilly as Phil, Chris and myself huddled for warmth awaiting the arrival of Richard the flag bearer. I was a bit concerned we may struggle to get a team out but Wessex runners gradually trickled in and it was good to see the return of Andy and Mike. More significantly it was David S’s 100th RR10 (postponed from the previous RR10 due to England’s run in the Euros), a great achievement and joins other Wessex centurions (Richard, David H, Steve, Peter and Doug).

Wide Lane is not to everyone’s taste but it is a fast, flat course with plenty of space for positioning. A short loop, under the tunnel, two laps of a bigger loop, back under the tunnel and a final ‘sprint’ back around the short loop again to finish.

Nine Wessex runners home safely in the order of Jay (96), Phil (131), Mike (136), myself (179), David S (217), Chris (232), David H (260), Andy (261) and Richard (262). An ‘A’ team result and just narrowly missing out on a ‘B’ team one. Next race in two week’s time, at Cadland in the New Forest.
