A very cold start for the first race of 2024, with temperatures barely above freezing. Five hardy, Wessex runners made it to the start line in the New Forest. David H had already been out for a short run that morning, whilst I had not long got back from London. We were back at Ocknell campsite, where we had marshalled the car park at CC6 #3 – needless to say Hardley and Totton’s car parking ability was inferior to ours.
Richard had cleaned the flag and it was looking splendid in some weak, early morning sunshine. We were very keen to get moving in view of the temperature but whilst gathered at the start we noted the kit of newly formed Winchester Running Club (red, white and black) and some of our fellow runners sporting running sandals – seemed a poor choice of footwear for the conditions.
We were led on a ten minute walk to the start and despite the dry weather in the last few days there were plenty of muddy puddles. The start was narrow and congested, some announcements were made at the front but nobody could hear, athletes in front moved forward so I assumed we had started.
A short, narrow climb through a wooded section and then we were out into the open of the ‘forest’ itself. We dipped under the A31 via a subway which was flooded, water still pouring in from two drainage pipes. Then it was to the downhill section. By the time I reached there the race leader had already descended / ascended and was heading for home. I passed Phil on the way down, then it was a sharp turn and back the way we came. It was a steep, steady climb with plenty of mud to turn it into a bit of a slog. Eventually I made it to the top, into the forest again and headed for the finish line. There was another nasty little climb before the finish (which I had forgotten about) and a final push to get over the line.
All Wessex home safely in the order Phil (82), myself (203), Kevin (242), David H (252) and Richard W (278). A team result gained and some cakes, as always, afterwards.
There is a quick turnaround with the next CC6 in two weeks time – Holmsley campsite, January 28th. Hoping for another good turnout and team result.
